India’s Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has cancelled two offshore wind tenders totalling 4,500 megawatts (MW), the agency confirmed on Tuesday.
The cancelled auctions included a 4,000 MW tender launched last year and a 500 MW tender initiated in 2024. The larger auction reportedly offered offshore acreage off Tamil Nadu, while the smaller round covered a site off Gujarat and included a support contract.
SECI did not provide a reason for the cancellations, though market speculation points to a lack of bidder interest. The agency has been contacted for further comment.
Bids for the 4,000 MW tender were due by the end of July, while submissions for the 500 MW round were expected earlier this month. Both processes had seen multiple deadline extensions, according to industry sources.
The cancellations mark a setback for India’s ambitions to expand its offshore wind capacity, which remains at an early stage compared to its onshore wind and solar sectors.
