Dominion Energy Virginia has announced plans to install a 1-megawatt solar array at CarMax Park, the upcoming home of minor league baseball team the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The installation is set to begin after the team’s 2026 season concludes.
The project will include over 1,700 solar panels on the stadium’s roof and adjacent parking areas. Dominion said the array will be one of the largest solar installations in professional baseball and is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 250 homes at peak capacity. The development remains subject to local and state regulatory approvals.
“We’re thrilled that such an iconic Richmond landmark will help deliver reliable, affordable and increasingly clean power for our customers,” said Ed Baine, president of Dominion Energy Virginia.
The solar system will consist of rooftop panels in two tiers and five solar-covered carports, utilizing previously developed land. Dominion stated the initiative is part of its broader clean energy strategy in Virginia. The company operates the third-largest solar fleet among utilities in the U.S., supplying power to more than 750,000 homes.
Flying Squirrels managing partner Lou DiBella described the initiative as an example of the team’s commitment to the broader community. “This project isn’t just about what happens inside the ballpark; it’s about stepping up as a community partner and using our platform to help bring clean energy to the city,” DiBella said.
The ballpark, currently under construction in Richmond’s Diamond District, is on track to open ahead of the 2026 baseball season.
Laura Thomas, the City of Richmond’s sustainability director, said the development aligns with the city’s long-term environmental goals. “This solar project represents the kind of integrated, collaborative approach that’s essential to achieving Richmond’s clean energy goals,” she said.
