Moldova has secured €190 million in projected investments through its first major renewable energy auction, awarding contracts for 165 megawatts (MW) of new capacity, the government said on Wednesday.
The tender allocated 60MW for wind and 105MW for solar, with winning projects to receive fixed tariffs over 15 years. Five wind developments will be implemented by three companies, including two with foreign capital, while six solar projects filled the available photovoltaic capacity.
“Over 40 projects submitted for our first public tender is a clear sign that Moldova is becoming an attractive market for renewable energy,” Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu said. He added that the high level of interest reflected investor confidence in the government’s approach to “transparency, predictability, and fair competition”.
Moldova’s total installed renewable energy capacity reached nearly 580MW in 2024, spanning solar, wind, hydropower, and biogas. Renewable sources contributed more than 16% of national electricity consumption in 2023, rising to 36% in April 2025, according to official data.
The country is targeting 30% of overall energy consumption from renewables by 2030, as outlined in its Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan. To support this goal, the government has introduced policy measures including land-use reforms, tax incentives, net billing for small producers, fixed tariffs for medium-scale projects, and auction-based pricing for large installations.
“This tender marks a milestone… a free and competitive market where both local and foreign-capital companies competed openly,” said Natalia Bejan, director of the Invest Moldova Agency. “It’s a clear sign that Moldova’s investment environment is maturing and becoming increasingly attractive for strategic projects,” she added.
