Malaysia-based Solarvest Holdings is set to build Brunei’s largest photovoltaic (PV) solar project through its wholly owned subsidiary Atlantic Blue, in partnership with Serikandi Oilfield Services and Khazanah Satu under the joint venture Seri Suria Power.
The 30MW solar power plant, scheduled to begin construction in the third quarter of 2025, will be located on a 332,900-square-meter rehabilitated landfill site in Kampong Belimbing, Mukim Kota Batu, according to Solarvest. The facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2026 and will mark a milestone as the largest solar project in Brunei to date.
The government of Brunei Darussalam has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Seri Suria Power, represented by the Department of Electrical Services, and has also entered into a land lease agreement to support the project.
“In 2024, Brunei’s electricity consumption totalled 3,242 GWh, with 95% generated from fossil fuels – highlighting an urgent need for a clean energy transition,” said Leon Liew Chee Ing, executive director of Solarvest.
The project emerged from a Request for Proposal (RFP) issued in 2021, requiring foreign developers to partner with government-linked companies to ensure local involvement in renewable energy development. It aligns with Brunei’s national targets to achieve a 30% renewable energy mix and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030.
In addition to contributing to Brunei’s climate goals, the initiative is expected to create local business opportunities and stimulate economic growth through skills development and supply chain participation.
Seri Suria Power said the project will act as a cornerstone in Brunei’s sustainable energy journey and reinforce its transition from fossil-fuel dependence toward a low-carbon future.
