RWE has held a topping-out ceremony for the new operations and maintenance base that will support Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, the 1.08-gigawatt (GW) Thor project, the company said on Thursday.
The three-storey, 2,300-square-metre facility, located at the port of Thorsminde on Denmark’s west coast, is set for completion by the end of 2025. From spring 2026, service vessels will depart daily from the site to transport technicians and personnel to the offshore turbines.
“The operations building for Thor will be the heart of our daily work and will create lasting local jobs in Thorsminde for many years to come,” said Pernille Asgaard Haaning, CEO of RWE Renewables Denmark. “It is also a strong symbol of the community and local support that has carried the project forward.”
RWE expects the base to generate between 50 and 60 permanent jobs and serve as a long-term hub for the project’s operations, which are expected to span at least 30 years.
Thor is being developed by RWE (51%) in partnership with Norges Bank Investment Management (49%), with RWE overseeing construction and operational management.
The wind farm will include 72 turbines, with installation scheduled to begin in 2026. Half of the turbines will feature low-carbon steel towers and recyclable rotor blades, according to RWE.
Once completed in 2027, the Thor project is expected to supply electricity to over one million Danish households.
