EDP Renewables (EDPR) has been awarded exclusive rights to develop a 219-megawatt (MW) wind project in Lower Saxony, marking the company’s first large-scale wind initiative in Germany, it said on Wednesday.
The Portuguese renewable energy developer secured the Uelzen-Suderburg site through a land auction organised by Caeli Wind, a digital platform that identifies viable wind energy locations. EDPR has since signed lease agreements with landowners covering around 2,700 hectares, with plans to install up to 38 wind turbines.
The project is expected to generate more than 475 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually, enough to supply approximately 150,000 households and offset more than 330,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
“This is an important step in our ambition to establish a multi-technology presence in renewables in Germany,” said Duarte Bello, CEO of EDP in Europe. “Being awarded with this project will strengthen our presence in the wind sector and will allow us to keep contributing to the energy transition in Germany.”
EDP entered the German market in 2022 through the acquisition of solar developer Kronos Solar EDPR. The company currently has two utility-scale solar and two distributed generation projects in advanced stages of construction in Germany and sees the country as a key growth market.
EDPR operates nearly 11 gigawatts (GW) of installed wind capacity worldwide and is developing hybrid projects that combine wind, solar, and storage across Europe and the United States.
