Marine and energy consultancy ABL has been selected as the marine warranty surveyor for the subsea cable transport and installation phase of the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project, the company said on Tuesday.
The 1,250-megawatt high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line will deliver electricity from hydroelectric facilities in Canada to New York City. Spanning 339 miles, the line includes 193 miles of subsea cable to be buried along Lake Champlain, the Hudson River, and the Harlem River, with installation scheduled to continue through 2024 and 2025.
The remaining 146 miles of the project will run overland. Once operational, CHPE is expected to supply around 20% of New York City’s electricity needs, making it the longest fully buried transmission line in the United States.
“This is an important energy transition project for the USA and Canada,” said Nicolas Cazares, managing director of ABL in the Americas. “ABL has both the marine and engineering expertise to ensure safe and efficient delivery, backed by our global track-record in subsea interconnector transport and installation.”
ABL’s responsibilities include reviewing and approving technical procedures, assessing equipment suitability, and overseeing marine operations such as dynamic positioning trials and cable installation. The consultancy’s U.S. office is leading the assignment, with additional support from teams in Canada, Europe, Asia and South America.
ABL is part of Oslo-listed ABL Group ASA, which operates in more than 44 countries providing services across marine and offshore energy sectors.
