TenneT has completed the installation of the 900-megawatt (MW) DolWin epsilon converter platform in the North Sea, a key step in the development of Germany’s offshore wind power infrastructure.
The platform will convert three-phase alternating current generated by Ørsted’s Borkum Riffgrund 3 wind farm into direct current, enabling efficient transmission to the mainland. The project is part of TenneT’s DolWin5 grid connection system, one of two 900MW offshore converter installations the company is delivering for commissioning in 2025.
The completion follows the recent installation of BorWin epsilon, another 900MW converter platform that will link EnBW’s He Dreiht wind farm to the German power grid.
“Just weeks after the successful installation of BorWin epsilon, we have now also completed the installation of DolWin epsilon in the North Sea – another key milestone for TenneT’s offshore expansion,” said Tim Meyerjürgens, TenneT chief executive. “Together, they will bring TenneT Germany very close to reaching the 10GW mark – a significant step towards securing Europe’s renewable energy supply.”
Borkum Riffgrund 3 is currently Germany’s largest offshore wind project and will comprise 83 Siemens Gamesa turbines. The converter platforms are designed to support TenneT’s 900MW standard, which has become a cornerstone of the company’s offshore grid connection strategy.
“TenneT has been developing offshore infrastructure for nearly 20 years,” Meyerjürgens added. “In 2010 we commissioned our first 400MW converter platform BorWin alpha. Since then, we have gradually scaled up to today’s 900MW standard – the backbone of current offshore grid connections like DolWin5.”
TenneT’s offshore network expansion is part of Germany’s broader energy transition strategy, aimed at significantly increasing renewable electricity generation while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
