Renewable energy firm Sonnedix has signed a long-term solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with Renfe, Spain’s national rail operator, to supply 420 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually to support Renfe’s commercial operations.
The agreement, formalised at a signing event in Madrid on June 6, is expected to help Renfe stabilise energy costs while supporting Spain’s broader transition to renewable energy. According to Sonnedix, the electricity delivered under the contract will be sufficient to power approximately 112,000 homes per year and will prevent the emission of around 155,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
“This agreement represents a new step in Renfe’s energy management roadmap,” said Marta Torralvo, general director of economics and finance at Renfe. “The high volatility of energy prices was causing significant disruptions and uncertainties in the performance of results, and this way, these costs are made predictable. Agreements like the one signed with Sonnedix help us move forward on this path.”
The solar energy will be sourced in part from Sonnedix’s recently inaugurated 150-megawatt Covatillas portfolio—comprising Covatillas 1, 5, and 6—in Cuenca, as well as the Portachuelo project in the province of Toledo.
Gregorio Morales, chief commercial officer at Sonnedix, described the agreement as a milestone in the company’s commercial strategy. “We are committed to delivering flexible, bespoke energy solutions that empower our clients to play an active role in the energy transition,” he said. “This diversification enables us to offer more tailored power profiles and deliver high-value-added services that respond to the evolving needs of our clients.”
Sonnedix said its Spanish portfolio continues to expand, with a growing focus on integrating battery storage and wind energy to complement its solar assets. The company aims to offer enhanced energy services as demand from large consumers increases across Europe.
