Azerbaijan has signed a wide-ranging energy cooperation agreement with China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited, covering renewable energy development, grid infrastructure, and workforce training, officials said on Tuesday.
The agreement was formalised during Baku Energy Week and signed by Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and Bo Wang, vice president of China Energy. It builds on commitments made during President Ilham Aliyev’s recent state visit to China and sets a legal framework for joint energy initiatives.
The partnership includes the co-development of several key projects: the 160-megawatt Fuzuli solar power plant, a 200MW offshore wind project in the Caspian Sea, and new hydropower schemes. The two sides will also collaborate on Azerbaijan’s Green Energy Corridor, an infrastructure initiative aimed at transporting renewable electricity.
“This agreement strengthens the energy dialogue between Azerbaijan and China and opens new opportunities for cooperation in green energy and innovation,” Shahbazov said.
The deal also covers energy planning, power network research, and the creation of a green energy research centre in Azerbaijan. In addition, both parties have agreed to support training programmes to help develop the country’s renewable energy workforce.
China Energy, one of the world’s largest energy engineering groups, is expanding its presence in international renewable markets. The Azerbaijani government has set a target to significantly increase its share of clean energy within the national energy mix in the coming years.
