German steel construction company EEW Special Pipe Constructions (EEW SPC) has commenced deliveries of monopiles for RWE’s 1,100-megawatt Thor offshore wind project, located in Danish waters.
In March, the company completed the first of twelve planned shipments at the Port of Rostock. To date, 15 of the 36 monopiles being manufactured by EEW SPC have been collected, according to a company statement. The remaining deliveries are expected to continue through July.
Each monopile measures approximately 82 metres in length and weighs around 1,300 tonnes. The steel foundations will support turbines at the Thor offshore wind farm, situated roughly 22 kilometres off the west coast of Jutland in the North Sea.
The Thor project, developed by RWE, is expected to be fully operational by 2027. Once complete, it will contribute to Denmark’s transition towards renewable energy and support the country’s climate and energy targets.
“This milestone marks a significant step forward in the construction phase of the Thor project,” EEW SPC said in a statement. “We are proud to contribute to one of Denmark’s most ambitious offshore wind initiatives.”
The project is part of Denmark’s broader strategy to expand its offshore wind capacity and reduce carbon emissions in line with EU climate goals.
