U.S.-based Eos Energy has entered the UK market through a memorandum of understanding with Frontier Power to deploy up to 5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of long-duration energy storage using zinc-based battery technology, the companies said on Tuesday.
The agreement supports Frontier’s plans to participate in Ofgem’s Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) cap and floor scheme, which is designed to provide long-term revenue certainty for energy storage projects that contribute to grid stability and renewable energy integration.
“We are proud to partner with Frontier Power, a respected leader in UK energy development, to bring Eos’ safe and recyclable storage technology to a new market,” said Justin Vagnozzi, senior vice president of global sales at Eos. “The novel cap and floor scheme incentivises investments in long-duration storage technologies that are critical for grid stability and renewable integration.”
Eos plans to deploy its proprietary Znyth™ battery technology, capable of eight-hour energy discharge, which the company says aligns with the LDES scheme’s objectives. The UK initiative is administered by Ofgem and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
The companies also plan to explore opportunities for local manufacturing and expansion into other international markets.
“We can co-locate manufacturing capacity near customer demand and not only provide innovative energy storage, but sustainable jobs in regions that have demand for our technology,” said Eos CEO Joe Mastrangelo. “We’re excited to partner with Frontier to execute on that vision in the UK market and beyond.”
Frontier Power CEO Humza Malik said the agreement reflects the company’s focus on innovation and cross-border cooperation. “By working with Eos, we are advancing our portfolio of long-duration storage projects and strengthening trade relations between the US and UK,” Malik said. “The prospect of local manufacturing in the UK could further boost economic growth and job creation.”
Eos noted that the framework agreement will be incremental to its project pipeline reported as of March 31, 2025.
