Industry leaders are calling on Germany’s incoming federal government to prioritize the continued expansion of wind energy in the next legislative period. At a press conference held today, representatives from the Bundesverband WindEnergie (BWE), IG Metall, Nordex Group, and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy emphasized the importance of a sustainable growth strategy that involves collaboration between associations, industry, and trade unions.
BWE president Bärbel Heidebroek highlighted the progress made in 2024, noting that it was a record year for wind energy, thanks to reforms introduced by the outgoing federal government. “After several years of decline, 2024 was a record year for wind energy thanks to numerous reforms by the outgoing federal government,” she said. She stressed that the incoming government must ensure continued momentum, with key tasks such as reforming the electricity market, implementing a flexibility strategy, and strengthening cybersecurity.
“The industry is ready to make its contribution,” Heidebroek added.
Heiko Messerschmidt, IG Metall’s shipbuilding and wind energy manager, emphasized the need for the future government to stay committed to the expansion of onshore and offshore wind. “Ambitious and reliable framework conditions are still needed to secure industrial production and jobs in Germany and Europe in the long term,” he said, expressing concerns over statements made during the election campaign that could hinder progress.
Karsten Brüggemann, vice president of the Nordex Group’s central region, stressed the importance of planning security for manufacturers. “Planning security is crucial for us,” he said. “The basis for this is formed by clear and reliable framework conditions,” adding that the growth of the wind energy market in Germany is vital for their operations.
Horst Hakelberg, chairman of the General Works Council at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, also voiced strong support for the expansion of wind energy. He called for resilience in Germany’s energy supply and urged the new government to implement the European Net Zero Industry Act to protect domestic jobs and foster value creation. “Germany and Europe must become independent in terms of energy supply,” Hakelberg said, emphasizing the need for strategic industrial growth in wind power.
The leaders’ call to action comes as the wind energy sector in Germany looks to build on recent momentum and meet ambitious renewable energy goals.
