WPD has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with LyondellBasell, a Netherlands-based chemical company, for the output from the 30 MW Licata wind project in Sicily, Italy. The project, which is currently under construction, will feature seven Vestas V150 turbines and marks the first development from WPD's 1.3 GW pipeline of wind projects in Italy.
LyondellBasell's commitment to the project underscores its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and integrate more sustainable energy sources into its operations. Chris Cain, LyondellBasell's Senior Vice President for Net Zero Transition Strategy, commented, “Partnering with WPD on the Licata wind project is a clear step forward in LyondellBasell's journey to provide innovative, lower-carbon solutions. Securing reliable, onshore wind power for our Ferrara operations helps us accelerate our emissions reduction efforts while supporting the long-term growth of sustainable industrial practices in Italy.”
The Licata wind project will play a crucial role in helping LyondellBasell achieve its sustainability goals, particularly in reducing emissions at its Ferrara site.
Andreas Chollet, Head of Project Development for Italy at WPD, highlighted the importance of long-term power supply contracts in advancing climate-friendly initiatives. “As an experienced, reliable and competent partner for long-term power supply contracts, we offer customized solutions for climate-friendly economic activity at eye level. We are very pleased to have found a reliable partner in LyondellBasell and to be able to support them in their transition to a more sustainable future,” he said.
WPD, with a global project pipeline of 19,320 MW for onshore wind and 5,015 MW for solar, is well-positioned to continue expanding its portfolio of power purchase agreements and contribute to the ongoing transition to renewable energy.
