Alfen has secured a deal to deliver one of the first large-scale four-hour battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Netherlands. The company will collaborate with the FlevoBESS consortium on the 31.6MW/126.4MWh project, which is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.

Located near Dronten in Flevoland, the new system will play a key role in supporting the region’s energy transition goals by stabilizing the grid, facilitating the integration of renewable energy, and preparing for future expansions that could increase the system’s capacity to 204MWh by 2028.

Stephanie Schockaert, Commercial Director for Alfen’s energy storage solutions, commented: “The Alfen team is very proud of the intensive preparatory phase with FlevoBESS and to partner with them on such a landmark project, both in terms of size and solutions. This system marks a significant step forward in energy storage capacity and technology, demonstrating our ability to deliver large-scale, future-ready solutions for our customers.”

The BESS will feature Alfen’s latest generation of battery containers, with an energy density of up to 4MWh within a 20-foot container. This design is intended to maximize efficiency by enabling compact, side-by-side, and back-to-back installations that reduce the system’s required footprint. Alfen’s largest inverters will be paired with these containers, allowing up to four hours of discharge capability for grid balancing, energy trading, and renewable energy integration.

Schockaert further emphasized: “Alfen’s innovative four-hour solution optimises space and incorporates the latest safety and operational advancements to ensure greater reliability and efficiency.” She added, “We’re proud to partner with FlevoBESS to introduce this innovation advancement and demonstrate Alfen’s commitment to offer scalable and forward-looking energy solutions.

FlevoBESS is a consortium of local entrepreneurs and stakeholders from the Flevoland region, focused on advancing sustainable energy solutions.
