TotalEnergies, in partnership with Air Liquide, has announced plans to establish a green hydrogen production facility at the La Mède platform in Bouches-du-Rhône, France, as part of its commitment to decarbonize its European refineries by 2030.
The project, scheduled for operation in 2028, will include a renewable hydrogen production unit operated by Air Liquide. With an annual capacity of 25,000 tons, the facility will recycle co-products from TotalEnergies' biorefinery to produce hydrogen for biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel. The €150 million investment will be shared between the two companies.
“This new renewable hydrogen production project, carried out with Air Liquide, allows us to accelerate the decarbonisation of our La Mède platform,” said Vincent Stoquart, President of TotalEnergies' Refining & Chemicals division. “Nearly 10 years after the announcement of its conversion, the La Mède platform is continuing its transformation and becoming a low-carbon hydrogen production centre, thus contributing to the decarbonisation objectives of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-D'Azur region.”
The initiative complements TotalEnergies' ongoing Masshylia project with Engie, which focuses on producing green hydrogen via water electrolysis. Targeting 10,000 tons of annual production, the first 20MW electrolyzer is planned to launch by 2029, subject to regulatory and subsidy approvals.
TotalEnergies aims to leverage low-carbon hydrogen to reduce its refinery CO2 emissions by 3 million tons annually by 2030. The company emphasizes that this effort aligns with its strategy to transform its operations and meet its carbon-reduction goals.
