Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, announced on Thursday an expansion of its Millers Branch Solar project in Haskell County, Texas, bringing the total installed capacity to 512 MW. The new third phase of the project will add 132 MW to the existing capacity.
Currently, the Millers Branch Solar Facility's Phase I is set to generate 200 MW upon completion, with Phase II announced in May. The Phase III expansion is scheduled to begin electricity generation in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The expansion has already secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) with electronic design automation company Synopsys Inc. and electronic equipment maker Keysight Technologies, both of which will purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from the third phase. Synopsys has committed to a 90-MW deal for power from Phase III.
Additionally, the output from Phase I is contracted under a 20-year virtual PPA with US medical equipment giant Thermo Fisher Scientific, while Phase II has agreements with several major companies, including Cisco, Juniper Networks, IDEXX Laboratories, Cadence, Bio-Rad, PTC, and a large unnamed healthcare company, all of which will buy RECs.
