Apex Clean Energy has finalized agreements to supply 408 MW of renewable energy to a consortium of 11 universities and institutions in the Boston and Cambridge area, including Harvard University.
The two 15-year virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) cover output from the 200-MW Big Elm Solar project in Bell County, Texas, and the 208-MW Bowman Wind project in Bowman County, North Dakota. Big Elm Solar began operations in 2024, while Bowman Wind is slated for completion in 2026.
The collaboration was spearheaded by the Consortium for Climate Solutions, a collective aimed at achieving carbon neutrality for its members. The consortium is led by Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Mass General Brigham (MGB), alongside other healthcare systems and public and non-profit organizations.
These agreements mark a significant step in aligning institutional sustainability goals with tangible renewable energy procurement, supporting both environmental and operational objectives.
