Victoria's State Electricity Commission (SEC) has announced an investment in the construction of a 119-MW solar park with an integrated battery storage system, as part of the state's broader goal to transition to 100% renewable energy across its sites.
The project, which will be one of Australia's first publicly owned utility-scale renewable energy sites, will be developed in two phases.
The first phase will involve building the photovoltaic (PV) farm, while the second phase will add a 100-MWh two-hour battery energy storage system (BESS), designed to store excess energy for use during peak demand periods.
The project is part of SEC's AUD 1-billion (USD 651.7 million) initiative to expand renewable and energy storage capacity by 4.5 GW across the state.
The SEC Renewable Energy Park in Horsham will be developed in partnership with Swedish project developer OX2. The solar park will feature over 212,000 panels, generating an estimated 242,000 MWh of electricity annually—enough to power around 51,000 homes. The electricity produced will be used to supply Victorian government customers.
