EDP Renewables North America LLC has partnered with Arizona-based utility Salt River Project (SRP) to develop a 200-MW/800-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Arizona.
The project, named Flatland Energy Storage, is set to be operational by 2025. It will be located near Coolidge, adjacent to the recently completed 200-MW Brittlebush Solar Park.
The Flatland Energy Storage system will be capable of providing power to over 45,000 homes for four hours during peak demand periods. The BESS will store excess energy during off-peak times, making it available for use during high-demand periods.
Sandhya Ganapathy, COO of EDP Renewables North America, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We're excited to be partnering with SRP on the largest utility-scale storage project in the EDP group's global portfolio to date. Storage is key to modernising the US power grid and is a requisite in accelerating the adoption of renewable energy while boosting grid reliability and resiliency.”
