Innagreen and Cowessess First Nation have officially inaugurated the 200MW Bekevar wind farm in Saskatchewan, a milestone project highlighting collaboration between commercial energy firms and Indigenous communities. Innagreen owns 83% of the project, while Cowessess First Nation holds a 17% stake, following the acquisition from developer RES in 2023.
Situated across Hazlewood, Kingsley, and Cowessess reserve lands, Bekevar features 36 Nordex N155/5.X turbines. Its output is contracted to SaskPower under a 25-year power purchase agreement, providing electricity for approximately 100,000 homes in the province.
The project's benefits extend beyond clean energy generation. Cowessess First Nation will receive significant annual returns, supporting economic development and funding critical community programs. Canada's federal government contributed $50 million to the project, emphasizing its alignment with national goals for clean energy and job creation.
Canadian Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson praised Bekevar for its role in advancing decarbonization while fostering economic opportunities in Saskatchewan. Cowessess First Nation Chief Erica Beaudin underscored the importance of Indigenous leadership in the clean energy transition.
Innagreen CEO Olly Alexander highlighted the project as an example of innovative financing and partnership driving Canada's renewable energy future. The Bekevar wind farm reflects a growing trend of inclusive energy projects that deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits.
