Suomen Lantakaasu, a Finnish firm specializing in manure-based liquefied biogas (LBG), announced plans to invest more than EUR 80 million (USD 85 million) in a renewable liquefied biogas plant in Kiuruvesi, Finland, as part of the broader Upper Savo complex. The new plant will utilize cattle farm manure and other agricultural and food industry byproducts.
Construction of the facility is expected to begin this winter, with commissioning set for 2026. Once operational, the Kiuruvesi plant will have the capacity to liquefy approximately 125 GWh of biogas annually, equivalent to the annual fuel consumption of 250 heavy-duty vehicles.
The biogas produced will be distributed via local energy company St1's network for use as transportation fuel. Lundsby Renewable Solutions A/S has been selected as the plant's supplier.
The Upper Savo project also includes three smaller satellite plants in Lapinlahti, Sonkajarvi, and Nurmes, although construction decisions for these are contingent on the completion of environmental permits and zoning processes.
The total estimated investment for the Upper Savo project is around EUR 100 million, with EUR 19.2 million in support from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.
Suomen Lantakaasu is a joint venture between St1 and local food company Valio. The company is also developing a nearly identical-sized plant in Nurmo and exploring new sites in Ostrobothnia and North Ostrobothnia. It aims to achieve a total output of 1 TWh, with ongoing projects covering nearly half of this target.
