Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, has successfully launched its 65-MW/260-MWh Mossy Branch battery energy storage system (BESS), designed to enhance the resilience of Georgia’s electric grid.
Located near Columbus, in Talbot County, the facility offers four hours of storage capacity and will be operated as a standalone unit, directly charging from the electric transmission grid.
The project was included in Georgia Power’s 2019 integrated resource plan and received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission in 2021.
Finnish technology firm Wartsila Corp served as the technology provider and EPC contractor for the Mossy Branch facility.
Looking ahead, Georgia Power is also working on a 265-MW BESS project in Cherokee County, expected to be operational by 2026, along with four additional battery storage projects totaling 500 MW.
