Building materials company CRH has commissioned a 30-megawatt wind farm to supply renewable electricity to its Medgidia Cement Plant in Romania. The project, initiated in August 2023, is now fully operational, with five turbines generating an estimated annual output of 80 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
According to CRH, this wind farm is the first in Romania to exclusively power a cement facility. The renewable energy source will supply a substantial portion of the Medgidia Plant's annual energy needs, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of its cement products while supporting Romania's shift toward clean energy.
Eunice Heath, CRH's chief sustainability officer, commented on the project's impact, saying, “This is a significant clean energy project for CRH and is one of the many ways we are helping to create a more resilient and sustainable built environment.” Heath added that the project reflects CRH's commitment to decarbonizing operations and delivering lower-carbon building materials for construction needs.
The wind farm's completion marks a step forward for CRH in meeting its sustainability objectives and aligns with broader European goals for reducing industrial emissions through renewable energy integration.
