French utility Engie, a consortium of EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power (KOWEPO), and an alliance between Jinko Power and Jera are competing to develop the 1.5-GW Khazna solar PV project in Abu Dhabi's Al Khazna area.
These entities have submitted their bids to the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), which will evaluate the proposals based on technical and commercial criteria.
The winning bid is expected to be announced by Q2 2025, with a subsequent power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with EWEC.
The Khazna project will generate enough power to supply approximately 160,000 homes in the UAE, bringing EWEC's total solar capacity to around 5.5 GW.
This initiative supports Abu Dhabi's goal to achieve 13 GW in solar capacity by 2030 and to supply 60% of its energy from renewable sources by 2035.
Earlier this year, EWEC awarded the 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar PV project to a consortium including EDF Renewables, KOWEPO, and Masdar.
