UK energy company Centrica plc has secured a contract to provide balancing and optimisation services for a newly opened green hydrogen plant at Port Esbjerg, Denmark, operated by European Energy A/S.
Centrica's role will involve managing power production from the co-located wind turbines and directing excess electricity generation to hydrogen production.
The announcement follows the inauguration of a 3-MW electrolyser at the site, with plans for European Energy to expand the facility by adding two additional electrolysers, which will boost the total capacity to 12 MW. The green hydrogen plant will source electricity from two wind turbines that are part of the 16-MW Made Wind Turbine Test Center.
European Energy anticipates that the plant will initially produce approximately 270 tonnes of hydrogen annually, which will be supplied to the Port Esbjerg.
Additionally, excess heat generated will be utilized by the local heating utility, DIN Forsynin. Once all three electrolyser units are operational, the complex is projected to produce around 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
