Hystar AS has been awarded a €26 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund to support the installation and operation of an automated gigawatt (GW) production line for its proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser in Høvik, Norway. The funding will facilitate the development of a production facility capable of producing 1.5GW of electrolyser stacks annually when operational in 2027, with plans to scale up to 4.5GW by 2031.
The company emphasizes that its PEM electrolyser stack technology is designed to achieve significant cost reductions, enhance performance, and improve safety in green hydrogen production. By automating the stack production process and leveraging existing supply chains for essential components, Hystar aims to rapidly scale its operations and make green hydrogen more affordable and accessible.
Currently, Hystar produces stacks at its existing Høvik production line, which has an annual capacity of 100MW and is already supplying commercial projects. Chief Executive Fredrik Mowill stated, “Our Høvik GW factory demonstrates our commitment to rapidly expanding our European operations and meeting the strong demand for our technology globally. The EU Innovation funding will enable us to drive unseen levels of cost and production efficiencies, which is particularly important across hard-to-abate sectors.”
