Norwegian solutions provider has inaugurated its fully automated proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser plant in Wallingford, , significantly increasing its annual capacity from 50 MW to 500 MW.

As of September 30, 2024, the total costs for the expansion project reached NOK 230 million (USD 20.9 million/EUR 19.4 million), with an additional NOK 81 million anticipated to complete the facility. The expanded plant aims to enhance stack efficiency and reduce production costs, positioning Nel for future growth.

In a related development, Nel has secured a grant of up to EUR 135 million (USD 145 million) from the EU Innovation Fund to support the phased build-out of its next-generation pressurised alkaline technology, currently in the prototype phase.

However, the company recently faced a setback as terminated its 1-GW capacity reservation agreement with Nel for the Clean Hydrogen Hub project.
