Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor MT Group has been contracted to establish a green hydrogen production and refuelling station at the Port of Klaipeda in Lithuania. This initiative, with an investment of EUR 10.5 million (USD 11.4 million), aims to create the first hydrogen station in the Baltic region, as confirmed by the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority.
The project will feature a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser capable of producing 500 kg of hydrogen daily, which will be stored in high-pressure tanks. The generated hydrogen will serve multiple purposes, including supporting the port's operations and providing fuel for rail and road transport, encompassing both commercial and private vehicles. Future plans may also include refuelling commercial ships at the port.
Under the contract, MT Group will oversee the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the technological equipment for the hydrogen facility. The company will also integrate electrical, automation, and safety systems, in addition to project management tasks. MT Group has already commenced preparatory work and expects to begin construction activities in 2025.
