German energy group Uniper SE has entered into a nine-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to deliver a total of 575 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of hydroelectric power to an undisclosed industrial customer in Germany. The agreement is set to begin in 2025, with an initial annual delivery of 25 GWh.
From 2027 onward, the supply will increase to 75 GWh per year until the contract concludes in 2033. The customer is described as a “major international industrial gas producer,” and the contracted electricity will be utilized for green hydrogen production, aiding the decarbonization efforts in the Rhine-Ruhr industrial region.
Uniper's Chief Commercial Officer, Carsten Poppinga, emphasized the significance of the contract, stating that it showcases the company's capacity to meet customer demands while affirming its position as a reliable partner in the energy transition. He noted that Uniper's flexible energy generation assets play a crucial role in restructuring the energy sector while ensuring a stable supply. Poppinga expressed enthusiasm about the contract's contribution to accelerating decarbonization in a significant German industrial area, marking another step in Uniper's ambition to become a leading provider of green energy solutions.
