The Ministry of Mines and Energy of Colombia has initiated a public comment period for a draft decree aimed at amending Decree 1073 of 2015, with the goal of enhancing the development of geothermal energy generation in the country. This process allows citizens to provide observations, comments, and proposals until October 16, 2024.
In accordance with the stipulations of paragraph 8 of Article 8 of Law 1437 of 2011 and Decree 1081 of 2015, the Ministry has created a platform for public engagement regarding the proposed modifications. The draft decree includes significant revisions to the existing legislation, addressing key aspects of geothermal development.
This encompasses the establishment of a framework for granting geothermal exploration permits, provisions for geothermal co-production opportunities, including the extraction of critical minerals, and requirements for developers to actively involve communities in their projects.
Comments can be submitted through the Ministry of Mines and Energy's official website. Additionally, the National Hydrocarbon Agency of Colombia has previously announced plans for the first round of auctions for geothermal energy projects, set to take place before the end of the year.
