Plug Power Inc has entered into a partnership with Spanish logistics group Carreras to explore the use of fuel cells in warehouse applications, with the goal of establishing the first hydrogen-powered logistics site in Spain. The project aims to evaluate the performance of Plug's hydrogen fuel cells compared to traditional lead-acid batteries in forklift operations at Carreras' logistics center located in Masquefa, near Barcelona.
The Masquefa initiative is designed to serve as a model for expanding hydrogen fuel cell technology across Carreras' extensive logistics network, which encompasses 46 warehouses throughout Spain. According to Plug Power, hydrogen fuel cells offer several advantages over lead-acid batteries, including faster recharge times, enhanced productivity with reduced downtime, and lower maintenance requirements.
If the project proves successful, Plug Power will provide Carreras with a comprehensive ecosystem to establish the hydrogen-powered logistics site at Masquefa. This delivery will include hydrogen fuel cells, a 1-MW electrolyser, and a hydrogen refuelling station.
The project was initiated in mid-August, and Carreras expects the full implementation of the green hydrogen ecosystem to be completed by the first half of 2026, following a phased execution plan.
