Cincinnati-based Synthica Energy has started construction on a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) plant in San Antonio, marking the city's first facility of its kind.
The project, located at 4318 N IH 35 in Bexar County, is expected to divert nearly 250,000 tons of waste from local landfills annually and is scheduled for completion in 2026.
The anaerobic digestion facility will convert organic waste into RNG, reducing the emission of thousands of tons of CO2 and methane.
The project aims to provide a more sustainable solution for waste disposal, particularly for food and beverage manufacturers, while also lowering transport costs and emissions by keeping waste processing closer to the source.
“Synthica Energy is redefining organic waste management, and the benefits are clear—environmental stewardship, community investment, job creation, and more,” said Grant Gibson, co-founder and chief development officer of Synthica Energy. He highlighted the company's goal of merging new technology with sustainability to create mutual benefits for the markets they serve.
The groundbreaking event, attended by local business leaders and Synthica's co-founders, underscores the region's commitment to sustainable development. Sarah Carabias Rush, chief economic development officer of greater
, praised the project as a significant step forward for San Antonio, emphasizing its potential for job creation and economic growth.
