A German-Austrian consortium has successfully delivered green hydrogen from Austria to Germany through an existing natural gas pipeline, marking a key milestone in the H2 Cross Border project, RAG Austria AG announced on Thursday.
The project involves RAG Austria AG and German energy firms Bayernets GmbH, Bayerngas GmbH, and Shell Energy Deutschland GmbH, along with milk processing company Meggle GmbH & Co KG.
The green hydrogen, produced by RAG via water electrolysis, was fed into Austria's natural gas network and transmitted to Germany, where it was delivered to Meggle in Burghausen in September 2024.
The initiative aims to accelerate the market ramp-up of hydrogen in Europe, facilitating cross-border collaboration and streamlining administrative processes. H2 Cross Border seeks to cover the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to transportation and end use.
