Sustainability Roundtable Inc announced on Thursday that its platform has secured three buyers for the renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by the 135-MW Prairie Solar project, developed by a subsidiary of German renewables firm BayWa r.e. AG in Illinois.
The buyers include Akamai Technologies Inc, a cloud services provider; Teradyne Inc, an automatic test equipment supplier; and Wayfair, an e-commerce company. The RECs have been contracted through the Net Zero Consortium for Buyers (NZCB) platform under an aggregated virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), as stated in a press release.
Akamai plans to acquire renewable energy from a 30-MW portion of the project located in Champaign County, while both Teradyne and Wayfair will purchase energy from 20-MW portions. The NZCB platform has also facilitated another entity in securing a VPPA for a 50-MW portion of the Prairie Solar project.
Spanning approximately 800 acres, the Prairie Solar project is expected to commence commercial operations by the end of 2025. Sustainability Roundtable serves as a strategic adviser in enterprise decarbonization, with its NZCB platform functioning as a confidential community for renewable energy buyers.
