A major investment in renewable energy has been announced at the Port of South Louisiana, where Canadian company Woodland Biofuels plans to establish a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant and an ultra-green hydrogen facility. This project aims to convert waste biomass into sustainable biofuel and will be located at the Globalplex facility within the port.
The initial phase of the project is anticipated to commence commercial operations in 2028, targeting the removal of approximately 210,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The subsequent phase is projected to enhance carbon capture efforts, aiming to eliminate nearly 660,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, with plans for potential underground storage.
To facilitate the project, the Louisiana Economic Development agency has proposed a financial incentive package valued at $250 million. This package includes performance-based grants and comprehensive workforce development programs to support the initiative.
The project is expected to significantly benefit the local economy by creating jobs and fostering regional growth. Furthermore, it is viewed as a crucial step in reducing Louisiana's carbon footprint and advancing the state's environmental objectives.
