Dominion Energy has achieved a significant milestone in its Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, installing the 50th turbine at the site located 33 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. The 2,640-megawatt (MW) project, the largest offshore wind initiative in the United States, is progressing on schedule, with plans to install 70 to 100 monopiles during the first of two installation seasons that run through the end of October.
The CVOW project, which will ultimately feature 176 turbines, underscores Dominion Energy's commitment to advancing offshore wind energy in the U.S. “Our on-time, on-budget Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project proves that regulated offshore wind works in the United States,” said Robert M. Blue, Dominion Energy's chair, president, and chief executive officer.
The monopile foundations, essential for the stability of the wind turbine generators, are being staged at Portsmouth Marine Terminal. These foundations are single, vertical steel cylinders manufactured by EEW SPC, a global leader in the field, and are being securely installed into the sea floor to support the turbines.
