The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced on Tuesday the approval of an additional grant totaling $21 million aimed at expanding the supply of renewable energy in Tajikistan.
This supplementary financing is designated to support the further modernization of the Golovnaya hydropower plant, specifically targeting the replacement of power generation unit 4.
Unit 4, which was not included in the ADB's original project from 2013, had ceased operations in 2019 due to significant damage to its mechanical equipment. The original project had provided a substantial grant of $136 million, intended to replace five of the plant's six power generation units.
The latest grant will enable the replacement of the damaged unit, ensuring the comprehensive modernization of the plant. As a result of this ongoing upgrade, the installed capacity of the Golovnaya hydropower plant is projected to increase from 240 megawatts in 2012 to 274 megawatts by 2026.
This enhancement aligns with Tajikistan's broader goals to bolster its renewable energy infrastructure and improve energy security.
