Statera Energy has been granted planning permission for a 400-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Dorset, England, the company announced on Friday. The approval from Dorset Council will facilitate the construction of a facility capable of delivering up to six hours of dispatchable power.
Located near Chickerell and adjacent to an existing National Grid substation, the BESS will enhance the resilience and flexibility of the British power grid. The facility will operate alongside long-duration energy storage and other flexible technologies.
The storage site will cover 30 hectares, with 21 hectares allocated for community parkland. The project also includes plans for planting trees and hedgerows to maintain the area's natural beauty.
This BESS represents Statera's largest consented battery storage project to date. In May, Statera submitted a planning application for a 500-MW battery project in Oxfordshire, South East England. The proposed facility will feature 296 modified shipping containers and is expected to be operational by 2027.
