Eku Energy, the UK battery platform of Macquarie's Green Investment Group (GIG), has received development approval for a 250-MW/500-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The approval for the Williamsdale battery was granted by the ACT government, as announced by the developer in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.
The Williamsdale project is a key component of the federal district's Big Canberra Battery plan, aimed at enhancing the security of the ACT power grid by establishing a network of battery systems to maintain grid stability. The BESS will be located south of Canberra and will store renewable energy sufficient to power one-third of Canberra for two hours during peak demand periods. Additionally, the facility will provide fast-acting frequency control services to the grid.
According to the project's website, financial close is expected in 2024, with construction slated to begin the same year. The battery is projected to become operational in early 2026.
Eku Energy will oversee the development, construction, and operation of the Williamsdale BESS, sharing 50% of its net revenue with the Territory. EDPR Australia, formerly known as ITP Development, will provide development and engineering services for the project.
