Cyprus-headquartered Tharisa plc, a chrome and platinum miner listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, has announced a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Etana Energy to supply renewable energy to its Tharisa Mine in South Africa.
The deal will provide wind and solar power from the Western Cape and Northern Cape via the existing electricity grid.
The 15-year agreement will cover up to 44% of the mine's power demand starting in 2026. This new arrangement complements a 40-MW solar plant currently being developed on-site by local units of TotalEnergies and Chariot, which is set to meet 30% of Tharisa Minerals' energy requirements.
Etana Energy, one of South Africa's five licensed energy traders, obtained its 25-year license in May 2022.
