Construction has commenced on the Battery Park Zeewolde, a significant battery energy storage system (BESS) project located in the Netherlands. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key figures including Sjoerd Sieburgh Sjoerdsma, director of Wind Farm Zeewolde, Jan Veenink, Co'nn Rennen (board members of Wind Farm Zeewolde), and local officials Steven Scheffer, alderman of the municipality of Zeewolde, and Harold Hofstra, deputy of the Province of Flevoland.
The Battery Park Zeewolde, situated next to the Windpark Zeewolde transformer station on Vogelweg, will span 2,000 square meters and have a storage capacity of 65 megawatt hours. The facility is projected to store energy equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 12,000 households.
Sjoerdsma commented, “Battery Park Zeewolde will soon be one of the larger battery projects in the Netherlands. We are very happy with the collaboration in the run-up to the construction of this mega battery, both with the municipality of Zeewolde and the Province of Flevoland.”
He added, “With Battery Park Zeewolde we contribute to the solutions [for the energy transition] by storing energy, when necessary, in this mega battery park.”
Residents of Zeewolde have been given the opportunity to participate in the project through the energy cooperative De Nieuwe Molenaars. Rolls-Royce Power Systems is responsible for delivering the BESS and providing the 16 battery containers.
Upon completion, a hedge will be planted around the substation and battery park to ensure it remains out of view from the street. The Battery Park Zeewolde is expected to become operational in the fall of 2025.
