German transmission system operator 50Hertz announced this week the early completion of the Ostwind 2 offshore grid connection in the Baltic Sea, nearly three months ahead of schedule.
“After a planning, approval, and realization period spanning approximately seven years, we have achieved a precise landing,” commented Marco Nix, Chief Finance and Investment Officer at 50Hertz.
The completion of the last of three cable systems for Ostwind 2 followed a successful four-week trial run. The Ostwind 2 link facilitates the connection between Parkwind's 257-MW Arcadis Ost 1 and Iberdrola's 476-MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farms.
Arcadis Ost 1 has been feeding into the grid since late 2023, and with Baltic Eagle's initial turbines already operational, Ostwind 2 is poised to transmit up to 750 MW to 50Hertz's grid upon full operational readiness.
Ostwind 2 traces a path similar to Ostwind 1, connecting offshore wind areas northeast of Ruegen island to mainland Germany. Future projects like Ostwind 3, Ostwind 4, and Bornholm Energy Island are slated to utilize this critical infrastructure.
