partnered with Multiverse Computing to successfully pilot a computing solution aimed at optimizing the deployment of grid-scale batteries in northern Spain. The project, overseen by i-DE, Iberdrola's distribution company in Spain, marks a significant step in enhancing grid stability amidst the increasing integration of renewable energy sources and electric vehicles.

Multiverse Computing's innovative approach utilizes quantum and quantum-inspired algorithms to determine the optimal number, types, and locations of batteries across the grid. This initiative not only reduces the costs associated with battery integration but also enhances overall network performance, crucial for maintaining grid reliability and voltage control.

Enrique Lizaso Olmos, CEO of Multiverse Computing, highlighted the transformative potential of quantum technology: “With the power of quantum computing, private and public institutions can meet sustainability goals while saving on both fixed and variable costs. We are proud to support the development of more reliable and economical green energy in Spain alongside a world-leading clean energy provider like Iberdrola.”

The pilot project focused on Guipuzkoa's electricity grid in the Country, demonstrating promising results over its ten-month duration. Quantum algorithms developed by Multiverse Computing consistently matched or surpassed traditional benchmarks, showcasing their effectiveness in maximizing grid efficiency and reliability.

Estibaliz Goni, Process and Technology Director at i-DE, expressed optimism about the project's outcomes and future prospects: “The results of this pilot project are encouraging, and we will continue exploring the deployment of this technology. There are many challenges to overcome to ensure we have the smart and robust grids required to deliver the energy transition, and innovations like this will help us get there.”

The initiative forms part of Iberdrola's Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub and aligns with the , underscoring a commitment to pioneering advancements in grid management and sustainability. As global energy demands evolve, collaborations leveraging cutting-edge technologies like quantum computing are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a resilient and sustainable energy future.
