LS GreenLink, a subsidiary of South Korean manufacturing giant LS Cable & System, has announced plans to build a new $681 million cable production facility in Chesapeake, Virginia, on the East Coast of the United States. This facility represents Virginia's inaugural manufacturing site for offshore wind industry components.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin hailed the announcement as a significant advancement for the state's clean energy sector, anticipating the creation of 330 permanent full-time jobs at the Deep Water Terminal Site in Chesapeake.
“LS GreenLink's investment in Virginia underscores the Commonwealth's leadership in offshore wind industry manufacturing,” stated Governor Youngkin. “Virginia's skilled workforce, strategic logistics location, and favorable business environment have positioned it as an ideal location for LS GreenLink to serve its global clientele in submarine power cables.”
The state-of-the-art factory, spanning 750,000 square feet, will specialize in producing next-generation high-voltage direct current cables, currently in high demand worldwide.
“This facility represents our commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and engineering,” remarked Bon-Kyu Koo, President and CEO of LS Cable & System. “It will bolster our capacity to meet the escalating global demand for submarine power cables and solidify our position as an industry leader.”
LS GreenLink's Managing Director, Patrick Y Shim, expressed enthusiasm about integrating into Virginia's business community, extending gratitude to partners including the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Chesapeake Economic Development Authority, and Hampton Roads Alliance.
Liz Burdock, Founder and CEO of Oceantic Network, highlighted the broader implications of LS GreenLink's investment: “Today's announcement underscores the momentum of the US offshore wind industry, bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in investments and creating hundreds of sustainable jobs. With ongoing support from public officials and industry leaders, Hampton Roads is evolving into a pivotal hub for the US offshore wind sector.”
