Portuguese diversified group MCA Group has secured a contract for 319 megawatt-hours (MWh) of lithium-ion batteries from Samsung SDI, aimed at powering a series of energy storage projects in Angola.
Under the agreement, facilitated by MCA Deutschland GmbH, the E5S battery units will be integrated into a battery storage system (BESS) essential for electrifying 48 communes across five provinces in Angola.
This initiative is part of the Rural Electrification Project, designed to establish green electricity distribution infrastructure in three phases.
The project entails the installation of 48 hybrid solar systems paired with off-grid battery storage, targeting an overall installed capacity of 719 MWh of available energy. It aims to benefit over 200,000 households and more than a million people in Angola.
Managed collaboratively by MCA, the Angolan government, a consortium of banks, and supported by the German Export Credit Agency – Euler Hermes (ECA), construction commenced last year with completion slated for 2026.
