Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, recently visited Chinese turbine manufacturer Mingyang to explore potential collaboration opportunities. In a social media update on July 2nd, Utermöhlen highlighted China's leadership in offshore wind capacity using domestic suppliers as a key motivation for the visit.
“We gained many insights at their factories, research centre, and a floating prototype ready to go offshore next month,” Utermöhlen shared.
The timing of RWE's engagement with Mingyang coincides with the European Union's launch of an investigation in April under the Foreign Subsidies Regulation, targeting Chinese wind turbines. WindEurope has advocated for the EU Green Deal and Industrial Strategy to reduce dependency on Chinese imports within the bloc.
Despite regulatory scrutiny, Utermöhlen's visit underscores growing international interest in Chinese offshore wind technologies and manufacturing capabilities.
