Fervo Energy, a US-based startup specializing in geothermal energy, has finalized an agreement with Southern California Edison (SCE) to supply renewable power from its upcoming Cape Station project in southwest Utah. This landmark deal spans 15 years and involves delivering electricity from a planned 400-megawatt (MW) facility.
Cape Station, located in Beaver County, will be developed in two phases. The initial 70 MW phase is scheduled to be operational by 2026, with the subsequent phase expected to come online by 2028.
Under the terms of the agreement, Fervo Energy and SCE have signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) totaling 320 MW. This capacity will fulfill the annual energy needs equivalent to approximately 350,000 homes.
The deal solidifies Fervo Energy's position in the renewable energy market, marking a significant milestone with the world's largest geothermal PPA. Fervo, leveraging techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry, aims to advance sustainable energy solutions. The company recently achieved its first commercial project milestone in late 2023 and counts Google among its committed customers.
