Brazil's power sector regulator, Aneel, has reported receiving applications totaling approximately 85.4 gigawatts (GW) to be included under the provisional measure (MP) 1212/2024, aimed at extending benefits to renewable energy sources. This surge in applications represents a significant push towards expanding renewable energy capacity in the country.
According to Aneel, these applications span 1,983 energy plants, which either possess licenses or are in the process of obtaining them from the regulatory agency. The measure grants renewable energy projects an additional 36 months to commence commercial operation of their generating units, thereby enabling them to qualify for reduced tariffs on transmission and distribution systems (TUST/TUSD).
Highlighting the distribution among renewable sources, Aneel noted, “The majority of the registered applications, totaling 65.7 GW, are associated with solar plants.”
Under the terms of the measure, construction work on these projects must commence within 18 months from the issuance date of the MP.
