Ceres Power Holdings and Shell Collaborate on 10-MW Solid Oxide Electrolyser Module

Power Holdings has announced a significant contract signing with for the development of a 10-MW pressurized solid oxide electrolyser (SOEC) module. This collaboration aims to design a scalable module that can be expanded to hundreds of megawatts for diverse industrial applications such as synthetic fuels, , and green steel.

This agreement builds upon the existing partnership between Ceres and Shell, which commenced in 2022 with the implementation of a 1-MW SOEC system at Shell's (R&D) facility in Bangalore, India. Leveraging insights gained from the 1-MW demonstration project, the companies aim to create a commercially viable and scalable solution.

SOEC technology promises notable efficiency enhancements, delivering approximately 35% more per unit of electrical energy when integrated with heat from industrial processes. The project's objective is to achieve a module-level efficiency of less than 36 kWh/kg of hydrogen, in line with the EU SOE 2030 technology targets.

“The aim of this contract is to develop a pressurised module design that can be scaled to hundreds of megawatts, for use in large-scale industrial applications such as synthetic fuels, ammonia and green steel,” stated a representative from Ceres Power Holdings.
