Ceres Power Holdings has announced a significant contract signing with Shell for the development of a 10-MW pressurized solid oxide electrolyser (SOEC) module. This collaboration aims to design a scalable module that can be expanded to hundreds of megawatts for diverse industrial applications such as synthetic fuels, ammonia, and green steel.
This agreement builds upon the existing partnership between Ceres and Shell, which commenced in 2022 with the implementation of a 1-MW SOEC system at Shell's research and development (R&D) facility in Bangalore, India. Leveraging insights gained from the 1-MW demonstration project, the companies aim to create a commercially viable and scalable solution.
SOEC technology promises notable efficiency enhancements, delivering approximately 35% more hydrogen per unit of electrical energy when integrated with heat from industrial processes. The project's objective is to achieve a module-level efficiency of less than 36 kWh/kg of hydrogen, in line with the EU SOE 2030 technology targets.
“The aim of this contract is to develop a pressurised module design that can be scaled to hundreds of megawatts, for use in large-scale industrial applications such as synthetic fuels, ammonia and green steel,” stated a representative from Ceres Power Holdings.
